What You Should Know about Anxiety

An anxiety attack is such a very disturbing experience. A person who has experienced an anxiety attack once will be living in constant fear of having another attack. Anxiety attacks may occur without a warning and it could happen anywhere you go. Its symptoms may start to be mild but if left untreated it could develop into something that is very debilitating. The symptoms may vary in intensity and severity depending on each person’s chemical makeup and psychological structure. The symptoms would include the following:
- shortness of breath
- choking sensation
- chest pain
- muscle tension
- irritability
- inability to sleep
- inability to concentrate
- ruminating thoughts about an impending danger
The good news is that anxiety is definitely a treatable condition. Some people prefer to be treated the traditional way. Traditional or mainstream method of treating anxiety would include:
- prescription medications
- cognitive-behavioral therapy
However, there are a lot of ways to conquer anxiety without the need to take medications. Many of these would entail much about lifestyle modification such as the following:
- Start giving up your vices.
This may seem so difficult to do at first especially if you are used to going home late at night from a drinking spree with your friends. Giving up the habit of smoking is not an easy thing to do for chain smokers. But, one can never be completely cured from anxiety and anxiety attacks unless these vices are stopped. Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages would only exacerbate the chemical imbalance in the person’s body.
- Make it a habit to eat only those nutritious foods.
This not only means that you eat fruits and vegetables. But, sticking to a healthy diet also means that you stop eating processed foods. Avoid those foods that contain much sugar and salt. Stop drinking carbonated drinks but, rather grab your juicer and squeeze in your favorite fruit for a fresh juice.
- Exercise regularly.
Start walking for a few minutes every morning. This length of time that you spend for walking must increase as time goes by. Exercise allows your body to become more fit and healthy against anxiety attacks. If you do not want to go walking, then try the next tip.
- Engage in stress relieving activities.
Some people who experience frequent bouts with anxiety decide to engage in Yoga, Pilates, Tai-Chi and other exercises that allow them to meditate or exercise. Others also enroll in zumba and aerobics to release the excess adrenaline from their body which causes them to feel anxious. Many people also claim that they sleep better after having an exercise. Thus, they feel so relaxed and they feel that their bodies are fully charged with energy that they need for another busy day.
- Join a support group.
If exercise and other anxiety-relieving techniques are not enough to relieve you from the symptoms of anxiety you may join a support group. This support groups allow you to be in the company of fellow anxiety sufferers. By regularly communicating with them you will be able to express your fears, nervousness and anxiety without any apprehensions because you believe that they share the same experience as well.
- Consult a professional.
If you still feel that the symptoms of anxiety are still so persistent then, might as well consult a doctor or therapist. This way you will be given sound advice with regard to the kind of treatment that you should choose that will work best for you.
In most cases, anxiety calls for a lifestyle change. It is because anxiety serves as a warning that our daily routine and habits are not healthy anymore. Therefore, when a person experiences anxiety he should not ignore this feeling. But, rather take the time to ponder which aspects of his lifestyle have to be changed.
