Overcoming Panic Attacks – A Deep Breathing Exercise

Deep breathing techniques are just one of many effective methods to use when overcoming panic attacks. The great thing about this breathing exercise is that you can do it straight away, without any need for additional medication – Its a completely natural solution to the problem of anxiety.

When your panic attack hits, start breathing deeply, slowly and without tension.

Breath in, and out, and relax into the tension.

Allow the breathing to move at the pace it wants to.

Simply watch your breath, watch your lungs as they e x p a n d and contract.

If you want to breath quickly, then allow that to happen. Quickly or slow, your body knows the answers.

Pay attention to your body and what it is telling you.

Allow your breathing to naturally slow under its own steam.

See that your mind and your breathe are connected.

Understand that your breathing is the metronome for your thoughts, and that the faster you breathe, the faster that you think.

Know that to slow your mind, all that is needed is to slow your breathing.

Your anxiety is under your control at all times, and even though you may not know this intellectually, your body understands and can do what is necessary to protect you at all times.

Remember that you can relax if you want to. You can change this feeling if you want to.

This feeling, if not so good, can be made to be good. Its all in the breathing.

Breathe out the tension, and breathe in the goodness that surrounds you.

Expel the fear, and welcome the joy.

Accept all that is around you, and your place in it.

When you panic, know that this is to keep you safe.

Your body knows how to protect you. It knows what you need.

To be afraid is to be healthy, as if we were not afraid, we would do things that harm us.

To have fear is to understand our limitations, and to have a guide that tells us when its time to grow.

The feeling you have is your special guide, telling you that this is an opportunity.

With all things new, we enter the unknown. And beyond the unknown is understanding.

Breathe deeply, exhale your fear of the unknown.

Inhale to welcome your growth.

Shortness of breathe anxiety can be crippling for some, though if you practice the above exercise on a regular basis, then your body will begin to breath more easily and your panic and anxiety will be markedly reduced.
